Towards an Independent Taiwan

I believe Taiwan deserves international recognition as an independent sovereign nation. I propose that Taiwan rebrand as the Republic of Taiwan.

Currently, Taiwan has the official name, the Republic of China. The nearby People's Republic of China will not allow Taiwan to change its name. In fact, China's government policy disallows any change from the status quo. Officially, the two countries live in a state of suspended warfare.

Some reasons to care about Taiwan:

  • Taiwan has a rich culture that combines good aspects of Chinese, American and Japanese culture in a unique blend.
  • Taiwan transitioned from a military dictatorship to a democracy peacefully. It exemplifies what we hope democratic transitions would look like.
  • Taiwan legalized gay marriage before any other Asian country.
  • Taiwan has a distinct national identity.
  • Taiwan peacefully relinquished its nuclear arms program.
  • Of course, we all know Taiwan leads the world in advanced silicon conductor manufacturing.

Many people think Taiwan has a course towards de facto independence as long as it can survive the next 10 years. I want to raise public awareness of Taiwan and promote its soft power so that people would find an attack on Taiwan as unthinkably unpopular as an attack on Korea.
